Bear Rank

Bear Cartoon

After achieving the Wolf Rank, the Bear Badge is earned by boys who have completed second grade, or who are nine years old.  As with all Cub Scout ranks, you must first earn the Bobcat Badge to be eligible to work for this award.

To earn the Bear Badge, the boy must complete Bear Trail Achievements.  To earn the Bear Badge, a Cub Scout must complete 12 achievements out of a possible 24 that are offered in the book.  The achievements are grouped in 4 major areas, GOD, COUNTRY, FAMILY, and SELF.  Within each group, a required number of achievements must be completed, as indicated below.

As a Cub Scout completes his achievements towards the Bear (and Wolf) ranks, the Den Leader recognizes a boy's hard work with the Immediate Recognition patch and beads. It is worn on the button of the right shirt pocket.  This is used as an incentive towards continued achievement.  A Wolf will receive his Wolf Badge after her gets his fourth gold bead.  As a Bear, red beads are presented for each three Bear achievements earned. After he gets his fourth red bead, he will receive his Bear Badge at a pack meeting. Cub Scouts may continue to wear this emblem after ranks are earned until they become Webelos Scouts.

One of the Bear achievements involves earning the "Whittling Chip" patch and wallet card. Earning this card shows that a Bear has learned the fundamentals of knife safety.  Click here from more information on the Whittling Chip patch and wallet card:  http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/9152/whittlin-chip.html

AFTER a Bear Cub Scout earns his Bear Badge he may begin earning Arrow Points Electives.  He may work on his "Arrow Point Trail" at any time, however he cannot receive Arrow Points until AFTER he has earned the Bear Badge.

There is a big difference in the electives for arrow points for the Bear Rank.  The Bear Scout can go back and do requirements from the Achievements section and use them as requirements for arrow points, as long as they do not count any requirements from achievements that they used to earn the Bear Badge. Unused parts of achievements that were used for the Bear badge may NOT be counted toward Arrow Points.

The Achievement requirements and the Elective requirements can be freely mixed to count toward earning arrow points.

GOLD ARROW POINT:
For the FIRST 10 arrow point activities completed in his book, the Bear Cub earns his GOLD ARROW POINT.

SILVER ARROW POINTS:
For EACH 10 arrow point activities completed (AFTER HE EARNS THE GOLD ARROW POINT) the Bear Cub earns a SILVER ARROW POINT.

As a BEAR Cub Scout, a boy may earn any number of SILVER ARROW POINTS, but he may only earn ONE GOLD ARROW POINT for the first 10 arrow point activities that he completes.

There is also a very special award that Cub Scouts can earn.  By completing a specific set of conservation-related achievements and electives a Wolf Cub can earn International Scouting's World Conservation Award.  Earning this award allows Scouts of all ages to heighten their awareness and appreciation of nature and the environment.

The Cub Scouts Academics and Sports Program is targeted towards the physical, mental and emotional fitness of Cub Scouts.  Fitness includes the body (physically fit and healthy), the mind (thinking and solving problems), and the emotions (self-control, courage, and self-respect).  The aim of this program is to encourage the boys to DO THEIR BEST, as opposed to being highly competitive.

The Academic and Sports Program is optional for all Cub Scouts.  It is not part of the normal requirements towards ranks.  A variety of recognition items are available for the scouts (Wolf, Bear, or WEBELOS Scouts) who participate in the program.

bulletBelt loops are awarded to boys who complete the three belt loop requirements in an academic subject or sport.
bulletPins are awarded to boys who choose to continue their involvement in an Academics or Sports area.
